Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson has urged the Reds to make a move for Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud.

The France international looks set to be pushed further down the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium with the imminent arrival of Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon for a club-record fee.

For Giroud, Lacazette's arrival is likely bad news in a year where he will have to play and score regularly to book a spot in Didier Deschamps' France squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Liverpool have been linked with one of Giroud's team-mates in the shape of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but Thompson thinks the Reds should go for the striker instead.

"Instead of LFC signing [Oxlade-]Chamberlain they should enquire about Giroud – perfect for us off the bench?" Thompson wrote on Twitter.

Last season Giroud saw his playing time at Arsenal suffer as boss Arsene Wenger often preferred other options to spearhead the attack.

The Frenchman ended the campaign having made 40 appearances and scored 16 goals for the Gunners.
