Ryan Kent's Championship suitors, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Leeds United, have been left disappointed after Liverpool opted to loan the winger to a club in the German Bundesliga.

The wide-man caught the eye while on loan in the Championship at Barnsley last season and also impressed Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp over the course of pre-season this summer.

Kent duly attracted interest from the Championship and was wanted by Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Leeds – but Liverpool have chosen a different path for the youngster to take.

The winger is joining Bundesliga outfit Freiburg on loan for the season.

Freiburg are delighted to have secured Kent and admit that it was touch and go over whether they would be able to take him to Germany.

Sporting director Klemens Hartenbach said in a statement: "It was not clear for a long time whether Liverpool would let him go at all.

"The door was opened for us again in the last days."

Freiburg have handed Kent the number 14 shirt at the club and he could make his debut after the international break when the Black Forest side take on Jurgen Klopp's former club Borussia Dortmund.
