Max Meyer has put Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool on red alert by confirming he will leave Schalke next summer on a free transfer, meaning he will be able to sign a pre-contractual agreement in January.

Schalke had been hoping that Meyer could be convinced to sign a new contract with his current deal expiring next summer, but he knocked back a fresh proposal earlier this summer.

It had been thought Schalke could then look to sell him before the summer transfer window closed if they felt he would not sign, but he stayed put beyond deadline day.

Meyer has been linked with a number of clubs, including Liverpool and Spurs, and he has fired the starting gun on his suitors' efforts to woo him by confirming he will not sign a new contract and will move for free next year.

"I also said before the European Under-21 Championship that I could not accept the contract offer", Meyer told the Funke Mediengruppe.

"So we are where we are. As things stand there are no talks.

"So as things stand I will now move next year free of charge."

It is claimed that Schalke are now not looking to re-open talks with Meyer, meaning they have given up on keeping hold of the attacking midfielder.

How much game time he will be given by the Ruhr giants though is open to question and so far he has been handed just 18 minutes across two Bundesliga games and 19 minutes in the German Cup.

If such a situation continues, Meyer could yet look for an early way out in January.
