Leeds United star Pontus Jansson has insisted that he can be a captain for the Whites even without the armband.

The Sweden international was in the reckoning to become the Whites’ new skipper this season, following the sidelining and then ultimate departure of Liam Bridcutt, who captained the club during the 2016/17 campaign, in the summer.

But new Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen handed the captain’s armband to Liam Cooper for league games, while Luke Ayling has been skippering the team in the EFL Cup.

However, Jansson, who has managed to become an integral part of Leeds since joining the Championship outfit from Torino initially on loan in the summer of 2016, explained that it is not important for him to be named the captain as he can lead without the armband.

“I have talked to him [Christiansen] a couple of times about it”, Jansson was quoted as saying by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Like I said to him and I can say it now, I don’t need the thing on my arm to be a captain, I can be a captain without it also.

“I would not change myself because I am a captain, I would play in the same way anyway.

“So for me it’s not so important to be honest.”

Jansson, who was suspended for Leeds’ first fixture of the season against Bolton Wanderers, a game the Whites won 3-2, has thus far made four league appearances in the present campaign, helping the team to keep clean sheets in all of those outings.
