Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson thinks it is vital the Reds lock down Emre Can on a new contract.

The Germany international has now entered the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield and Liverpool saw off interest from Juventus in him during the summer window.

But the Italian champions have not gone away and are confident of tempting Can to Serie A next summer, when his deal with Liverpool has run out.

Thompson thinks that Can is starting to make his potential seen at Liverpool and it is vital the Reds tie him down on a fresh deal.

"Think he has really started to show his potential now he's fully fit.

"Crucial we tie him down", Thompson added.

Can is receiving regular playing time at Anfield under Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, who rates him highly, but has still not found common ground with the club to pen a fresh contract.

Juventus are already starting to woo Can's representatives in anticipation of locking him down on a pre-contractual agreement in January.
