Leeds United director of football Victor Orta is of the opinion that the Whites’ central defence is in fine fettle, following the capture of Matthew Pennington during the summer transfer window.

The young English centre-back joined Leeds from Premier League club Everton on a one-year loan deal in May.

Besides snapping up Pennington, Leeds also made Pontus Jansson’s loan deal from Torino permanent in the summer.

And Orta explained that he is pleased with the four centre-backs Leeds currently have at their disposal, namely, Pennigton, Jansson, Liam Cooper and Paudie O'Connor.

The Spaniard went on to add that the Yorkshire giants are also covered in full-back areas due to the presence of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, who joined on loan from Manchester United and Luke Ayling.

“It’s true that the defensive line is a sensitive line and we talked a lot about our defensive situation with head coach Thomas Christiansen”, Orta said in a question and answer session on Facebook, when asked if Leeds tried to sign any further central defenders.

“We went for Pennington because we had a lot of reports and I watched him play two to three times and I think he is a Championship level player.

“And we saw his flawless performance against Bolton.

“And now we have Pontus Jansson and we have Cooper with his new captaincy role which is good.

“Pontus Jansson is an international player and we also have Luke Ayling and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson [as full-backs].

“We feel we are really covered [defensively] and we feel we have four good central defenders with different styles.”

Leeds, who have conceded just twice in the league this season, have thus far managed to keep four clean sheets in five Championship outings, the second-best defensive record in the division.
