Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has insisted something extraordinary needs to happen to force him out of retirement to return to football again.

During his two-year stint at Manchester United, the Dutchman often said that his sojourn at Old Trafford will be his last job in football and little has happened since his departure at the end of the 2015/16 season to force him to reconsider his decision.

With the Netherlands struggling to qualify for the World Cup after missing out on the European Championship, there have been murmurs that Van Gaal will return to the national set-up in some role.

And the Dutchman admits that he was offered roles in the Dutch FA last year but he refused as he is still sticking to his decision to retire from football.

Van Gaal is not keen to work in Italian football and he admits that it is unlikely he will return to working in the game again.

The Dutch coach told the Algemeen Dagblad: “I am still saying Manchester United was my last job.

“I was offered a few roles in the KNVB last year but I said no as I’m done basically but I do think never say never.

“However, something would have to really trigger me. I’ve achieved everything I wanted to achieve, should I work in front of half empty stands at say Monaco? No.

“Of all the big countries I have just not worked in Italy. Italian clubs have hit big numbers recently but I like Italy as a holiday destination, it’s less beautiful as a football country.”

Van Gaal was sacked at Manchester United after he won the FA Cup at the end of the 2015/16 season.
