Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson feels the Reds were undid by their own basic defensive errors and not by great play from Sevilla, following their 2-2 draw with the Spanish outfit.

Jurgen Klopp’s team, who headed into the Champions League game on the back of a 5-0 loss to Manchester City last weekend, fell behind as early as the fifth minute at Anfield when Wissam Ben Yedder scored from close range after Liverpool's Dejan Lovren failed to clear his lines.

But the Merseyside giants reacted strongly and went 2-1 up by the 37th minute, courtesy of goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Firmino then failed to convert a penalty on the brink of the half-time break and it turned out to be a costly miss as Sevilla equalised in the 72nd minute through Joaquin Correa.

And Lawrenson is of the opinion that it was not great play from Sevilla, but Liverpool’s own basic defensive errors which led to the Reds conceding twice in their Champions League Group E opener.

“They are just basic errors”, he said on LFC TV.

“It's not like great players completely undid us.

“The first one we don't know what Lovren was trying to do and for the second one we just fell asleep.

“At any level if you fall asleep then any team will create chances against you.”

Liverpool, who have thus far conceded eight goals in four Premier League games, the second-worst defensive record in the division, are next up against Burnley on Saturday.
