Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno believes the Reds are still one of the prime candidates to top their Champions League group despite a 2-2 draw at home against Sevilla on Wednesday night.

Sevilla took the lead after just five minutes when Wissam Ben Yedder tapped in from close range after Dejan Lovren fell over while trying to clear the ball out of danger.

Goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead going into half time but their defensive frailties came to the fore again when Sevilla midfielder Joaquin Correa cut through their backline to score the equaliser for the Spanish outfit.

And Luis Muriel could have won it in stoppage time but shot wide from inside the box as the Reds held on to a point at home.

Moreno believes Liverpool deserved the three points and identified Firmino’s penalty miss as one of the missed opportunities for the home side.

The full-back still believes Liverpool are still in with a good chance of qualifying for the last 16 as group winners despite a sluggish start to their Champions League campaign.

“I’m sad as we deserved all three points”, Moreno told Marca.

“We had a lot of chances with Firmino’s penalty and the sequence of play before Correa made it 2-2.

“We remain candidates to finish at the top of the group.”

Liverpool will return to Premier League action on Saturday when they host Burnley at Anfield.
