Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has argued that the Reds don’t have the defensive game to cope with the best in the Champions League.

Their defence has again come under scrutiny after Wednesday night’s shambolic backline performance where Liverpool only managed a 2-2 draw against Sevilla despite dominating the chances at Anfield.

Defensive errors led to Wissam Ben Yedder and Joaquin Correa scoring the goals for Sevilla as Liverpool again looked shaky and uncertain at the back this season.

Jurgen Klopp decided against investing in a centre-back after failing to sign his top target Virgil van Dijk and after conceding 13 goals this season in all competitions already, the Liverpool manager is again facing questions over his choices.

Carragher admits Liverpool have very little to complain about in attack as they have the players to hurt teams, but stressed the defence is not good enough to play at Champions League level.

The Reds legend told Norwegian broadcaster Viaset: “The attacking players are good – Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are alright.

“But defensively they are not good enough for a European match against a team at the level of Sevilla.”

Klopp will be looking to address his defensive issues when they return to Champions League action later this month with a trip to Spartak Moscow on 26th September.

But adding new players is now not an option for the German following the closure of the transfer window, his fourth transfer window as Liverpool manager.
