Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists that Simon Mignolet still remains his number one choice between the sticks, but says Loris Karius will also have his chances, with the number of matches during the season being high.

The Belgian international sat on the bench for the midweek Champions League clash against Sevilla with his team-mate Karius replacing him.

However, the manager confirmed that Mignolet will continue to be his first choice and will feature in at least 85 to 87 per cent of the team's matches over the course of the season.

“Simon Mignolet is No.1. I said it already. At the end of the season, he will have 85 or 87 per cent of all games I think. For me, that is the number one", the manager said at a press conference.

With the season being long and the Reds taking part in as many as four tournaments in the form of the Champions League, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the domestic league, Klopp insists Karius won't need to wait for too long to get his chances.

“There will be other games, like the last one in the Champions League, where Loris Karius plays. Because he played against Arsenal, I think he was really ready and he played really well.

“Obviously the crowd needs to get a little bit used to his style of play but this is modern football; he takes the ball and he has cool build-up.

"I can’t remember one mistake, so he is in good shape and is a good goalkeeper – good for us, that’s all.”

Mignolet has featured in three Premier League matches for the Reds while Karius played in one, against Arsenal.
