Former Celtic defender Mark Wilson believes the three Hoops players who have signed contract extensions this week are the heart and soul of the team.

The Bhoys, who won the treble last season, tied Callum McGregor to a new long-term deal on Thursday.

Earlier in the week, Celtic skipper Scott Brown and Jozo Simunovic also put pen to paper on fresh contracts with the club.

The trio were instrumental in Celtic’s superb 2016/17 domestic campaign and have also featured heavily under Brendan Rodgers this term.

And Wilson, who feels Celtic will be boosted after the three players decided to extend their stay at Paradise, is of the opinion that the trio are of vital importance to the club.

“Yes, because it gives the club a boost”, he told Celtic TV, when asked if the deals are important outside the transfer window.

“These players, if you look at the three of them and how they have performed, they are the real heart and soul of the team.

“You have got your top centre-half and your top defensive midfielder and one of the best attacking midfielders – all signed up in the space of a few weeks outside the transfer window.

“It goes  to show that Celtic and Brendan Rodgers want them on board for a long time.”

Celtic, who made five signings during the summer transfer window, are yet to lose a domestic game in the present campaign and presently find themselves level on points with Aberdeen at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
