Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip has revealed former Leeds United striker Chris Wood gave him a "really hard challenge" during the Reds' 1-1 draw against Burnley at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Wood scored 30 goals in all competitions for Leeds last season and the Whites agreed to sell him to Burnley in the summer transfer window to let the Kiwi chase his Premier League dream.

The New Zealand international was handed a start by Burnley boss Sean Dyche and played his part in the Clarets earning a point on Merseyside; another former Leeds player, Charlie Taylor, was not in the matchday squad.

Matip had the job of dealing with Wood and admitted that the physically strong striker gave him a hard challenge.

Asked about Wood, Matip told LFC TV: "It was not easy, this challenge.

"But maybe we had to go for the second ball or something like this.

"It was a really hard challenge against him."

Wood played 87 minutes of the game at Anfield before being replaced by Sam Vokes as Burnley sought to hold on to the draw.

The striker could come face to face with former club Leeds this coming Tuesday when Burnley host the Whites at Turf Moor in the EFL Cup.

Wood was an unused substitute for Leeds in their EFL Cup first round tie against Port Vale and played for Burnley in the second round against Blackburn Rovers.
