Noel Whelan believes that Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald put in a mixed bag performance in the Whites' 1-0 defeat away at Millwall on Saturday.

Eyebrows were raised across English football when Leeds moved for Wiedwald and slotted him in to replace Rob Green as the club's number 1 in the summer.

Green eventually agreed to terminate his contract with Leeds and moved to Huddersfield Town, with it having become clear the German shot-stopper would be playing on a weekly basis at Elland Road.

Wiedwald has had little to do this term as Leeds have been solid in defence, but he was beaten on Saturday and Whelan thinks he did make several poor decisions which gave away possession.

But Whelan also admits Wiedwald made good saves to prevent Leeds' loss from being heavier.

"It was a mixed bag", he said on BBC Radio Leeds.

"Some of his decisions and clearances weren't the best.

"He gave the ball away in bad areas.

"But then saying that he redeemed himself with some great shot saving.

"It could have been a lot worse for Leeds if it wasn't for him", Whelan added.

Wiedwald has Bundesliga experience and made 25 German top flight appearances for Werder Bremen last term, but he fell out of favour over the summer transfer window and the club quickly agreed to his request to be allowed to move to Leeds.
