Manchester United legend Lou Macari feels Sunday's win over Everton became even more important as several of the Red Devils’ other title challengers dropped points at the weekend.

Jose Mourinho’s men joined Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table with a 4-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford, continuing their strong start to the season.

With last season’s top two, Chelsea and Tottenham, dropping points at home at the weekend, and Liverpool also failing to beat Burnley at home, the weekend shaped up nicely for the Manchester clubs.

And Macari stressed the importance of Manchester United’s win over Everton as he feels with the other contenders to the title dropping points, it was imperative the Red Devils took advantage.

He is pleased Mourinho’s men capitalised with a win at home to open up a little gap between themselves and the other teams early in the season.

The former midfielder told MUTV: “As the manager was saying the other results were more important.

“Right away Chelsea and Arsenal failing to win, Tottenham not winning at home and Liverpool [not winning] at home.

“Those were massive bonuses and before the game he surely he would have told his players we can’t afford to slip up today because we have an opportunity to open a little bit of a gap with the so called title contenders.

“And they managed to do it.”

Manchester United will return to league action next weekend with a trip to Southampton.
