Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor thinks if given the opportunity to start, Daniel Sturridge will find the back of the net more often than not as he believes the 28-year-old is a player capable of making the difference.

Sturridge, who did not finish 90 minutes in any Premier League game last season, played the whole match against Burnley at the weekend, a fixture which ended 1-1.

The English striker has managed to clock up just 174 minutes over four appearances in all competitions in the present campaign, scoring once.

And Mellor feels Sturridge, who has been named in the starting line-up just twice by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp this season, will score most of the time if he starts regularly as he is a natural goalscorer.

“Amazingly he didn’t finish 90 minutes in any Premier League game last season”, Mellor told LFC TV.

“This was the first time he completed the 90 minutes and that was good to see.

“He is a player capable of making the difference.

“He did not score but he is always a threat in the final third.

“You want Daniel Sturridge fit, he knows that, given the opportunity to start, he will be in goalscoring positions and more often than not he will find the net because he is a goalscorer.

“While he did not score, he certainly looked lively, like something might happen with him.”

Sturridge has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield behind Roberto Firmino, who has scored four times and set up three goals in eight appearances in all competitions this season.
