Ex-Liverpool striker Neil Mellor is of the opinion that the Merseyside giants’ performances have been better than the league table suggests.

The Reds, who drew 1-1 with Burnley at the weekend, are currently eighth in the Premier League table with just eight points from five outings.

Liverpool have managed to win just twice in the league this season and already find themselves five points adrift of the leaders Manchester City and Manchester United.

Despite creating numerous chances, Jurgen Klopp’s team have found the back of the net only nine times in the Premier League; four of those came in the 4-0 rout of Arsenal last month.

And Mellor believes Liverpool would have been in a better position in the league if they had been more clinical in the final third.

“Disappointing, we certainly wanted more points on board”, he said on LFC TV, when asked about Liverpool’s league position.

“I think the performances have been better than the league table suggests.

“We are creating a lot of chances, we just have not been clinical in the final third.

“Had we have been, we would have been in a much stronger position.

“We are enjoying being back in the Champions League.

“But it’s going to be a real battle this season, if we could put a few of the chances away we could be picking up the three points.”

Liverpool will next face Leicester City in the EFL Cup tonight before coming up against the Foxes once again four days later in a Premier League fixture.
