Former Liverpool forward Neil Mellor feels the Reds’ starting line-up against Burnley at the weekend showed how strong their squad is this season.

In the 1-1 draw with the Clarets, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp made as many as seven changes to his team that faced Sevilla in the Champions League last week, with Emre Can, Joel Matip, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah being the only four players to start both matches.

The German tactician also made similar drastic changes to his team when they faced Crystal Palace in the league after their meeting with Hoffenheim in the Champions League playoff round in August.

Although Liverpool failed to bag the full three points against Burnley at Anfield, Mellor is of the opinion that the Merseyside giants’ strong squad depth was on display last Saturday.

“Well, we saw it last time against Crystal Palace after the Hoffenheim game in the Champions League playoff game”, Mellor told LFC TV, when asked if he was surprised to see so many changes against Burnley.

“I think we expected to see changes and seven changes shows how strong our squad is at the moment.

“It looked a really strong line-up even after the seven changes.

“[Sadio] Mane was suspended, we know about that, but we still have the pace in the squad.

“Salah and obviously [Philippe] Coutinho coming back in for the first time this season was a huge boost.

“The goalkeeper situation which seems to have been rotated last few games.

“So seven changes, but that was still a very, very strong line-up for Liverpool.”

Liverpool could once again make several changes to their team for their EFL Cup clash at Leicester City tonight.
