Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Colin Calderwood thinks Spurs have a high quality backline, so much so that most of the players could comfortably step into midfield.

Ex-centre-back Calderwood, who is now assistant manager at Championship club Aston Villa, turned out for Spurs from 1993 until 1999 and has continued to keep a close watch on the fortunes of his former club.

He is impressed with the defensive unit built by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, dubbing it full of "high quality players in their prime" and Calderwood thinks most are so technically accomplished they could play in midfield.

"You are looking at high-quality players in their prime", the Scot told Spurs' official site.

"In fact, most of the defenders could play in midfield", Calderwood stressed.

"They’ve all got pace, there's a great balance with [Toby] Alderweireld and [Jan] Vertonghen, a left-right foot partnership and the technical quality on top of the tactical knowledge make Spurs so hard to break down."

Tottenham have so far conceded three goals in their five Premier League games this season.

Only one goal has been conceded by Pochettino's men in their last three matches in all competitions, the latest coming at the weekend in a 0-0 draw at Wembley against Swansea City.

Tottenham's defensive resources are likely to be tested this evening as Pochettino makes changes for the visit of Barnsley in the EFL Cup.
