Juan Foyth has thanked Jan Vertonghen for helping him out during his Tottenham Hotspur debut against Barnsley in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

The Argentine youngster, who joined Tottenham from Estudiantes on a five-year deal in the summer, started alongside Vertonghen and played the full game at Wembley, with Spurs winning the contest 1-0, courtesy of Dele Alli’s strike.

Foyth put in an impressive display against the Championship club and managed to mark his debut for Spurs by keeping a clean sheet.

And the 19-year-old, who explained that he was happier to see Spurs win the game, said that it was a dream of his to play at Wembley, Tottenham’s temporary home ground.

“I’m very happy to make my debut but I’m happier because we won”, he said on Spurs TV.

“Jan is a very good player and he helped me a lot so thanks to Jan.

“It’s an amazing stadium and it was a dream to play here.”

Tottenham had to wait until the 65th minute to break the deadlock and Foyth admitted that Mauricio Pochettino’s side found it hard against Barnsley.

“It was difficult, they defended very well”, he continued.

“But we always believed in us and it’s great that we won.”

Foyth, whose present contract with Spurs runs until 2022, is a product of Estudiantes’ youth system.
