Sergio Romero believes that he did enough last season to earn the trust of Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

The Argentine was Mourinho’s go-to goalkeeper in the Europa League last season and he even resisted the temptation to field David de Gea in the final against Ajax.

Romero played a huge role in Manchester United winning the competition and qualifying for the Champions League, but he is yet to get a look in this season as De Gea has looked in imperious form.

The Argentina number one is expected to feature against Burton Albion in the EFL Cup tonight and he has insisted that he will be ready to play whenever Mourinho requires him in the team.

He feels that he did enough in the previous campaign to earn a certain level of trust from the Manchester United manager.

Romero told MUTV: “I think I demonstrated that last year when I played 18 games and you saw how I did in those 18 games.

“I’m very happy and at ease at this club and the minute that Mr. Mourinho tells me I’m starting, I’ll be 100 per cent ready to go.

"When the manager says to me: ‘Sergio, you’re in the side for this game’, whether it’s the league or the cups, or whatever, I’m prepared to show that that he can still have faith in me because I’m in good form."

Mourinho could opt to give De Gea the night off against Burton and go with Romero in the starting eleven with Joel Pereira filling in the reserve goalkeeper’s spot in the squad.
