Former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie feels Leicester City were not good enough on Tuesday evening despite their 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium.

Liverpool were knocked out of the EFL Cup in third round as the second half goals from Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani were good enough for the Foxes to move to the next round of the competition.

The Reds dominated proceedings in the first half with Philippe Coutinho pulling the creative strings, but they failed to convert any of the numerous chances the team created.

Gillespie feels Liverpool again gave away two soft goals and the loss was a direct result of their failure to capitalise on the chances they created in the first half when they were the dominant team.

But the former Red does not believe Leicester looked any greater in the second half as well and they only made it more difficult for Liverpool to be a more creative force after the break.

The former Liverpool defender said on LFC TV: “We were so dominant in the first 45 minutes.

“I think it just shows that when you are on the top of your game, you have got to capitalise on it, you have got to take some of the chances.

“The disappointing thing is it just adds more fuel to the fire, losing two silly goals at the back again.

“I think Leicester were poor, I don’t think they were fantastic in the second half, they didn’t do an awful lot more other than shutting the avenue we had in the first half with [Andrew] Robertson getting to the by-line and getting the crosses in.

“And that really didn’t happen for Liverpool in the second half and I think you’ve got to give [Craig] Shakespeare a little bit of credit for that.

“But other than that they didn’t look a great threat all game.

“But yet they won 2-0.”

Liverpool will be looking to avenge their defeat this weekend when they again travel to the King Power Stadium to take on Leicester in the Premier League.
