Eunan O'Kane has admitted that Leeds United were not expecting to lead the Championship standings so early, with the midfielder explaining that his side are hopeful about extending their stay at the top of the table.

Despite losing 1-0 to Millwall last weekend, Leeds still find themselves level on points with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Cardiff City at the top of the Championship standings.

Leeds have a superior goal difference over the other two clubs, owing to their defence being the best in the league and the Whites having the second-best record in terms of goals scored in the division.

And O’Kane, who insisted that being top of the league means very little so early in the season, conceded that Leeds’ present league position is a bit unexpected.

“I don’t want to say it’s a surprise but at the same time I don’t think we expected it”, he told BBC Radio Leeds, when asked if Leeds are surprised with their league position.

“The message from all parties was to go out and have a good start to the season.

“And that comes from winning matches which we have been able to do.

“Thankfully we’ve won enough to take us to the top of the table and hopefully we can stay there.

“There are no trophies at this stage of the season so I would happily sit at the bottom today and be on the top in May.

“We’ll see how it goes, it’s a long season and hopefully we’ll stay there for much longer.”

Leeds, who beat Burnley on penalties in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, will next face Ipswich Town at Elland Road on Saturday.
