Manchester United legend Lou Macari feels Jose Mourinho has done well to convince Anthony Martial that he has a future at Old Trafford.

Martial struggled for minutes under Mourinho last season and the Manchester United manager did criticise some of his performances in the limited opportunities he received.

There was speculation in the summer that the Frenchman could look to leave Old Trafford for regular first team football, but the new campaign has shown that the forward remains a key player at Manchester United.

Mourinho has opted to rotate between Martial and Marcus Rashford in the left side attacker’s role in his team and the Frenchman has already netted four goals in seven appearances.

Macari feels the Manchester United manager played a key role in convincing the player to continue at the club and is confident that Martial will be playing in some of the bigger games going forward.

The Manchester United legend said on MUTV’s Matchday Review programme: “The speculation about him leaving was because he didn’t really show the form that he showed when he first came to the club.

“The media picked up on that and he was not playing and the talk was that he was desperate to play regular football, which most top players want.

“The manager has played a massive part in convincing him that this is the best place for him to stay and this is the best place to get a chance that he got tonight.

“He will play in bigger games and as the season goes on he will get his chances.”

With Rashford picking up a knock on Wednesday night, it remains to be seen whether Martial plays against Crystal Palace on Saturday at Old Trafford.
