Former Manchester United defender David May believes keeping David de Gea at Old Trafford has been as important as signing new players for Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho convinced De Gea to reject overtures from Real Madrid when he joined Manchester United in the summer of 2016 and despite murmurs of a the European champions wanting him in the recently concluded window, the Spaniard looks more settled at Old Trafford than ever.

He kept his 100th clean sheet for the club last weekend in Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Everton and May feels Mourinho deserves credit for keeping Real Madrid away from the Spanish goalkeeper over the last two summer windows.

The former Manchester United defender believes keeping hold of De Gea has been as important as adding more quality to the squad for Mourinho over the last two years.

May feels De Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world and remain a guarantee of points for Manchester United over the course of a season.

Asked if he is surprised that the Spaniard is still at Old Trafford, the former defender told MUTV: “Not really.

“I guess when Real Madrid come knocking your ears would prick up, but I think the manager has done a great job of holding on to him if all the speculation about him leaving was right.

“I reckon he is the best in the world. Jose signed some important players but keeping hold of him has been great.

“He will save you 15 points guaranteed – big Pete [Peter Schmeichel] used to do it, Edwin [van der Sar] used to it. There are games when he has nothing to do and then he makes the saves.

“He’s a top goalkeeper.”

De Gea has made 276 appearances for Manchester United since joining the club from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
