Manchester United legend Denis Irwin is backing Chelsea to remain strong contenders to win the Premier League title this season.

After a poor start to the season, Chelsea have recovered well over the last few weeks to remain within touching distance of the high flying Manchester clubs after six league games.

A 4-0 win over Stoke at the weekend again established the title credentials of Antonio Conte’s men and Irwin believes the Premier League champions remain strong contenders to retain the title.

The Manchester United legend believes that pundits were too quick to write off Chelsea’s title challenge this season because of a poor performance on the opening day.

However, he believes Manchester United have done a good job to start the season in a strong fashion and Irwin is hopeful that they will go into the international break on a strong footing.

The former defender said on MUTV’s Matchday Review programme: “I think Chelsea will be in a stronger shape.

“They got beat in the first game of the season at home to Burnley and everybody wrote them off straight away.

“They came back and won 4-.0 but we have done our job.

“We won 16 points from six games, we have a game at home against Crystal Palace next week, which I hope we’ll win and then there is a break.”

Chelsea face a stern test of their title credentials when they travel to table topping Manchester City on Saturday.
