Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas is hopeful that Marcos Alonso’s consistent performances will eventually earn him a national team call up in the near future.

The 26-year-old full-back played a key role in Chelsea winning the Premier League title last season after he joined the club from Fiorentina last summer.

The defender has again started the current season in a positive fashion and has also bagged two goals in the league, but he is still waiting for his first call-up to the Spain squad.

Fabregas admits that Spain coach Julen Lopetegui is not currently looking at his Chelsea team-mate because of the quality there currently is at the big Spanish clubs.

The midfielder is delighted with the consistency his compatriot has shown since joining Chelsea and is certain at some point Spain will take notice of his performances in west London.

Fabregas told AS when asked about Alonso being ignored by the national team: “I don’t think Lopetegui is not counting on him, in Spain there are great sides.

“Marcos is doing a great job here, both at the beginning when he started as a typical full-back and then later when he played has a wing-back.

“I hope he continues to play well and Julen calls him up.”

Alonso has represented Spain at Under-19 level, but a senior cap has remained elusive for the former Fiorentina man.
