Former Leeds United defender Robert Molenaar feels a good start to the season could make a positive difference to the Whites’ promotion bid.

Leeds have made a roaring start to their Championship campaign and are currently level on points with Wolves and Cardiff City at the top of the league table.

A superior goal difference means Thomas Christiansen’s men are occupying top spot and Molenaar admits that it could be the difference between Leeds returning to the Premier League or not.

The former White noted that despite last season’s seventh place finish, Leeds had a poor start to the campaign and this season’s positive beginning could carry them back to the top tier of English football.

He is hopeful this is the campaign the Yorkshire giants return to the Premier League, where they have not played since 2004.

The former defender told Radio Yorkshire: “I think last season the start wasn’t as good though it turned out to be a good season.

“Having this head start, Leeds could well finish at the top and getting the promotion.

“Obviously it will be a great achievement to return to the Premier League where the club belongs and hopefully the new manager will get them there.”

Leeds will be looking to return from Wales still at the top of the table after facing Cardiff City on Tuesday night in a Championship clash.
