Former Leeds United defender Robert Molenaar has revealed that he applied for the Whites job when Garry Monk left the club at the end of last season.

Following Monk’s departure, Leeds appointed Thomas Christiansen as their head coach and the Dane has started well, leading the club to the top of the Championship table.

But Leeds deliberated long and hard before snapping up the Dane and former White Molenaar admits that he was one of the candidates who applied for the job at Elland Road.

However, the Dutchman admits that he felt the Leeds job would have been too soon for him in terms of where he is at in his coaching career at the moment.

Currently managing Dutch Eredivisie outfit Roda JC Kerkrade, Molenaar admits that given his association with Leeds and English football, moving to England could be the logical step in his coaching career at some point.

"I work hard at developing my coaching skills and hope to coach at the highest level.
