Bayern Munich were keen on signing Liverpool bound Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, but despite holding talks described as "promising", pulled out after being unwilling to risk the midfielder suffering a serious injury before joining.

RB Leipzig continued to be clear throughout the summer window that they would not sell Keita as they planned to have the midfielder this term.

The news disappointed Liverpool, but the Reds were still able to agree a deal with RB Leipzig to sign Keita next summer, paying a premium on top of a buy-out clause which would have applied in 12 months.

According to German magazine Kicker, Bayern Munich were also interested in signing Keita, but they would not consent to a transfer so far in advance.

The Bavarians were worried about making a big investment in Keita and then the player suffering a serious injury before making the move.

It is claimed that talks between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig were "promising" before the Bavarians pulled out.

The Bundesliga champions could also have been cool on meeting Keita's wage demands in the event a move was on the table though as the midfielder would have wanted €20m per year, something which would have smashed their salary structure.

Bayern Munich's current top earners are Robert Lewandowski on €16m per year and Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer and Jerome Boateng on €15m per year.
