Former Leeds United and Rotherham United boss Neil Redfearn thinks there is something so wrong at Sunderland that not even Jose Mourinho could turn the Black Cats around.

Sunderland were relegated from the Premier League last term and turned to Simon Grayson in the summer, tempting the former Leeds manager to leave Preston North End for the Stadium of Light.

Grayson has seen Sunderland make a nightmare start to the new season and his side currently sit second bottom in the Championship table with just six points from ten games.

Redfearn sympathises with Grayson and thinks all is not well at Sunderland.

As such he is not laying the blame at Grayson's door and thinks even world-class manager Mourinho could not make a difference.

"There is something definitively wrong at Sunderland", Redfearn said on Radio Yorkshire's Yorkshire Football Show.

"There is manager after manager that it [the job] has swallowed up – and good managers.

"I just think there is something definitively wrong.

"There is something wrong with the infrastructure and the set-up – it's not right.

"You could have Jose Mourinho in charge of it and if the infrastructure is not right and you haven't got the players to go and carry this big ship, big club, then it's going to be tough.

"And there is more to it than meets the eye", he added.

Matters get no easier for Grayson this coming weekend when his takes his Sunderland side to former club Preston, who are flying in fifth spot under new boss Alex Neil.
