Former Scotland midfielder Michael Stewart thinks Celtic will be looking closely at Hibernian's John McGinn, but believes Rangers should already have moved for the 22-year-old.

McGinn has been turning heads with his performances for Neil Lennon's men and scored both his side's goals in a 2-2 draw at Celtic at the weekend.

It has been suggested that Celtic could make a move for McGinn soon and Stewart, thinking aloud, mused over whether the midfielder might be a replacement for Stuart Armstrong.

But the former Hearts man also stated his belief that Rangers should have targeted and landed McGinn before Celtic prepared to come to the party for his signature.

"Stuart Armstrong to go next summer and John McGinn to come in?" Stewart said on BBC Sport Scotland Facebook Live.

"Stuart Armstrong effectively only signed a year's extension, he signed a new two-year contract, so at the end of this season it will be the same discussion as it was in the summer.

"John McGinn is continuing to improve as a player.

"I am pretty sure that Celtic will be looking at him.

"But he's the type of player that Rangers should have been looking at before.

"He's somebody that knows the league, young, Scottish, hungry", Stewart added.

McGinn, who started his career at St Mirren and joined Hibernian in 2015, has also been linked with clubs from south of the border and Celtic may have considerable competition if they try to land him in January or next summer.

The midfielder has been capped on four occasions by Scotland, but could add to that number over the current international break.
