Manchester United legend Denis Irwin admits that the next month or so will put the Red Devils’ title credentials under a severe test.

Jose Mourinho’s men have won six of their opening seven Premier League games and are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table, level on points with Manchester City.

Manchester United have also won their opening two Champions League games with aplomb and many feel the Red Devils could win their first league title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.

However, their detractors have been quick to point out that Manchester United are yet to face any of the top teams in the league thus far and Irwin admits that the fixture list has been kind to the Red Devils at the start of the season.

The Manchester United legend believes the picture will be much clearer in the next month or so where they will face teams such as Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Chelsea.

But Irwin is certain that the squad are good enough to go toe-to-toe with the big guns of the Premier League as well.

The Manchester United legend said on MUTV’s Paddy Crerand Show: “We have done fantastically well in the first seven games, but the fixture list was kind to us.

“City have played Liverpool, away to Chelsea and Chelsea have been away to Spurs and played Arsenal as well. We are the only team in the top six or so who have not played in any big games.

“Not only the Premier League games, but we also have Benfica away and we will all know a lot more about this team in five weeks' time.

“But listen I am more confident than I have ever been for several seasons that we can go and challenge in these games.

“Liverpool away is our toughest away game, Chelsea away is always a struggle and Tottenham at home as well – so we’ll know a awful more in five weeks' time.”

Manchester United will return from the international break and head to Merseyside where they will take on Liverpool at Anfield on 14th October.
