Pedro Caixinha has explained that he does not want Rangers to abandon their style of play when they come up against St. Johnstone after the international break on 13th October.

The Saints, who are a physical side, often use long balls as opposed to the Gers passing style of play.

During their last visit to McDiarmid Park in the final game of the 2016/17 campaign, Rangers’ passing style of play was on display as they won the contest 2-1, courtesy of goals from Kenny Miller and Jon Toral.

And Caixinha stated that he wants a similar display against St. Johnstone next week as he feels Rangers will put themselves under pressure if they try to replicate the opposition.

“This is one team that plays very good on the long balls, they have very good strikers, they have a great block on the second waves to win the second balls”, Caixinha told on Rangers TV, when asked about the upcoming game against St. Johnstone.

“I remember that in the last match of last season we play against them in the same stadium we are going to play in next Friday and what we did was try to play the game the way we wanted to play rather than let the opponent play their own game.

“That’s definitely what we need to do.

“We need to fight for the second balls and be balanced to win the duels, and to win the second balls we need to do it.

“That’s not our game so we need to place the ball on the ground, let’s have some mobility, let’s play, let’s move, let’s create spaces, let’s attack spaces and take the identity from the opponent.

“I think that’s the only way we need to compete against the teams that are more physical.

“Don’t let them play their own way.”

Both Rangers and St. Johnstone have 14 points from eight games, but the Gers presently occupy third spot in the Scottish Premiership table owing to them having a superior goal difference.
