Phil Neville has insisted that the current Manchester United squad look the happiest set of players the club have had, going back to the last few years of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign.

Jose Mourinho’s side have started the season like they mean business and are currently level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League standings.

Mourinho himself has looked a lot more relaxed figure on the touchline and Neville believes the Manchester United manager feels that he has the team to achieve great things this season.

The former Manchester United defender also pointed out that the team spirit in the current squad look unparalleled and says they are the happiest set of Red Devils he has seen in years.

Neville said on the Premier League TV’s Premier League Today programme: “With Jose now he looks in control as he looks at his team and thinks I can go all the way with this team.

“They look the happiest set of players I have seen at Manchester United for a number of years and that’s going back to the last one or two seasons of Sir Alex Ferguson.”

The former Red believes it is clear Mourinho is enjoying managing the current Manchester United team and contrary to his last Chelsea side, he has allowed the Red Devils more freedom to play with flair and panache.

“In terms of the spirit and togetherness, he has said it himself they have been a pleasure to manage and he’s taken everything that’s good about Manchester United and has adapted his own little style to the team”, Neville added.

“He’s let the players have a little bit of freedom which he didn’t with his last season at Chelsea where they were more rigid and pragmatic.

“While here he thinks he can trust the players such [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial and [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan to play with a little bit more freedom because the club demands it.”
