Phil Neville has insisted that Pep Guardiola is under more pressure to deliver at Manchester City this season than Jose Mourinho is at Manchester United.

Guardiola suffered the first season of his managerial career without a trophy at Manchester City last year and has again spent heavily in the summer to overhaul his squad.

They are level on points with Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table at the moment, but Neville feels it is Guardiola who is under more pressure than Mourinho.

While the EFL Cup and the Europa League wins last season have provided Mourinho some leeway at Old Trafford, he thinks Guardiola is on a hiding to nothing at Manchester City after finishing third and trophy-less last year at the Etihad.

He believes it will be considered a massive failure by Manchester City’s owners if Guardiola fails to deliver the big trophies to the club this term.

Asked who is under more pressure, Guardiola or Mourinho, Neville said on the Premier League Today show: “Without the shadow of a doubt Pep Guardiola.

“I think one he didn’t win a trophy last season and second if you invest that much money into a manager and if he went empty handed this season and there’s no trophy in the cabinet, it will be a massive failure for Pep and Manchester City.

“Manchester United actually had a fantastic last season, they won the League Cup, the Europa League and got back into the Champions League.

“Two trophies give Jose a little bit of breathing space this season and maybe next season but I think with Pep, it is this season or nothing.

“I don’t think the Abu Dhabi owners, after investing so much money, will expect anything less.”
