Phil Neville has revealed that he still cannot get his head around Chelsea’s decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in the summer.

Matic was left behind when Chelsea departed for their pre-season tour of the Far East after it became clear that the Serbian wanted to leave and Manchester United swooped in to take him to Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho played a key role in convincing the player to move to Manchester United and Matic has admitted that he wanted to work with the Portuguese again after their time together at Chelsea.

Matic has looked the part for Manchester United this season and has been a key player behind their good start to the season with his commanding performances in the middle of the park.

And Neville admits he is still struggling to find a reason behind Chelsea’s decision to sell the midfielder to their biggest title rivals in the Premier League in Manchester United.

The former Red said on the Premier League TV’s Premier League Today programme: “At £35m, Nemanja Matic has been an absolute steal.

“Every time I see Chelsea play now I think what were Chelsea doing when they allowed him to join their biggest Premier League rivals?

“It’s a crazy bit of business on both sides – Jose for getting him and for Chelsea to letting him leave the football club.”

With Paul Pogba expected to be out for another month, Matic will be expected to marshal Manchester United’s midfield as they approach a tricky set of fixtures after the international break.
