Brighton and Watford are keeping a close watch on negotiations between Espanyol and Pau Lopez’s representatives over a new contract.

Lopez spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, but Spurs haggled on getting a discount over their €7m option to sign him on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

However, they could not agree a fee with Espanyol and Lopez returned to the Catalan club, where he has been playing regularly this season because of Diego Lopez’s injury.

The goalkeeper’s contract runs out at the end of the current campaign and according to Catalan daily Sport, Lopez has instructed his representatives to prioritise a new deal with Espanyol before talking to other clubs.

Lopez wants to continue at the Catalan club as he has been playing regularly, but a number of teams are keeping a close watch on the talks between his agents and Espanyol.

Real Betis and Real Sociedad are interested and it has been claimed Watford and Brighton are also keen on signing the goalkeeper and are keeping their ear to the ground with regards to the new contract talks.

Brighton even made an unsuccessful move for him in the summer and are interested on signing him on a free transfer next year.

It remains to be seen if Tottenham could rekindle their interest in Lopez if he does decide to quit Espanyol.
