Manchester City failed with a bid of €35m for Valencia striker Rodrigo in the summer transfer window, after the Spanish side's coach asked for the offer to be knocked back.

Pep Guardiola was keen to add the striker to the ranks at the Etihad Stadium and tried his luck by slapping an offer on Valencia's table.

But according to Valencia-based daily Superdeporte, Valencia knocked back the proposal after coach Marcelino told the club that Rodrigo must stay.

Los Che coach Marcelino believes that Rodrigo can become a key player for the club over the course of the campaign and was determined to keep the 26-year-old.

Marcelino has started Rodrigo in all except one of Valencia's La Liga matches this season.
