Former Scotland star Michael Stewart believes that if Scotland were able to tempt Brendan Rodgers from Celtic then he could lead the country to a major international finals.

Scotland's hopes of booking a playoff spot in the race to reach the World Cup in Russia next summer went up in smoke on Sunday night due to a draw in Slovenia.

A debate is now raging over whether Scotland boss Gordon Strachan should stay on, something former Hearts midfielder Stewart is undecided on.

But in considering who might come after Strachan if there is the need for a new boss, Stewart threw Rodgers' name into the hat.

And he has no doubt if the former Liverpool manager was tempted from Celtic then he could lead Scotland to Euro 2020.

"Would we be able to afford, and would Brendan Rodgers even contemplate it?" Stewart said on BBC Sport Scotland Facebook Live.

"If you were able to break the bank and go and get someone like that, I feel he could get Scotland to qualify for a major tournament", he added.

Rodgers led Celtic to a domestic treble last season and is again impressing as Bhoys boss in the current campaign.

Celtic would be likely to fight off any approach from Scotland for the Northern Irishman.
