Everton manager Ronald Koeman has emerged as a strong candidate to become the next head coach of the Netherlands national team.

The Netherlands have failed to qualify for a second successive major tournament after suffering the ignominy of not booking a place in next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

After finishing third in Brazil in 2014, the Dutch players were not part of the European Championship last year and will again be spending time on the beaches when the top teams in the world collide in Russia at the end of the season.

Dick Advocaat, who was roped in to save the Netherlands’ qualification hopes, is expected to leave after his contract expires in December and the Dutch FA have shifted their focus towards appointing the new head coach.

And according to Dutch daily De Telegraaf, Everton manager Koeman is one of the top candidates the Netherlands want to rope in to take charge of the national team next year.
