Rangers midfielder Josh Windass is sure that the Gers are closing the gap on rivals Celtic, but stressed his side are still in a transition period.

Pedro Caixinha's side lost the first Old Firm meeting between the two teams this season and the Portuguese has been under big pressure since the Gers were knocked out of the Europa League in the first qualifying round.

But a 4-1 win over Hamilton before the international break settled the ship and Rangers, who are third, can close the gap to league leaders Celtic to three points by beating St Johnstone on Friday night.

Much has been made of how far ahead Celtic are of Rangers, but Windass, who arrived at Ibrox in 2016, is sure that his men are reeling in the Bhoys.

"Yes [the gap is closing]", he said at a press conference.

"Obviously we've got a new team and there's a big transition period going on.

"But I think with the team we've got now we should be better challenging than last year", the midfielder added.

Windass has found favour with Caixinha and is one of the Rangers manager's key men when it comes to adding energy in the middle of the park.

The midfielder had been linked with leaving Ibrox in the summer, but is now embarking on a second full season as a Rangers player.
