Mousa Dembele has expressed his delight after his Tottenham Hotspur team-mate and “brother” Jan Vertonghen became Belgium’s most capped player ever.

Before the international break, Vertonghen had represented Belgium 95 times, just one short of then national record holder Jan Ceulemans’ tally.

The 30-year-old equalled Ceulmans’ record when he played in the 4-3 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday and then became the new most capped player for Belgium when he featured in his country’s 4-0 win over Cyprus in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night.

And Dembele said that he was extremely proud and happy at his compatriot’s achievement.

The midfielder posted two pictures of himself and Vertonghen together on Twitter; in the first picture both are seen in Spurs’ gear and in the second the duo are pictured training together for Belgium.

“Amazing guy.

“So happy for you on this achievement bro.

“97 caps Jan Vertonghen.”
