Former Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn does not believe that the Whites should drop under-fire goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald for the visit of Reading this weekend.

Wiedwald was installed as Leeds' number 1 when he arrived in the summer from Werder Bremen, a development which led to Rob Green opting to leave the club.

The German custodian has struggled to fill Green's shoes and some fans are now calling for him to be dropped and replaced by Andy Lonergan when the Royals arrive at Elland Road on Saturday.

But Redfearn thinks doing so would be unfair on Wiedwald and insists the goalkeeper has been part of the Whites' good start to the season.

"To be fair, Leeds have had a good start to the season. Yes they've had a blip with three aways games, but by and large they've had a really good start to the season and Wiedwald has been part of that", Redfearn said on Radio Yorkshire.

"I know we've said he's had little to do, but he's still been part of that.

"It would be pretty churlish to leave him out at this point.

"I know everybody is clammering for Andy Lonergan to come in, but I think that boat has sailed.

"Once you've made your mind up and gone with Wiedwald then he's your 'keeper.

"You can undo a lot of things if you start making wholesale changes now when really at home, they are good at home.

"Wiedwald is part of their way of playing."

Wiedwald will be looking to ease worries over his spot as Leeds' number 1 if head coach Thomas Christiansen hands him a start once again against Reading, who have been struggling in the Championship this season.
