Former Liverpool defender Dominic Matteo believes Manchester United have been given a lot of credit this season despite not playing one of the top sides thus far.

Manchester United have made a fantastic start to the season and are level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after seven league fixtures.

But they are yet to face any of the traditional top six this term and many feel playing at Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday will test Manchester United’s title credentials.

Matteo admits that Liverpool are yet to hit their stride this season, but he has indicated Manchester United have been given a lot of undue credit despite Jose Mourinho’s men not facing any of the top teams thus far.

And he believes it makes Saturday’s game even more intriguing as both sides need a result for different reasons at an early stage of the campaign.

Matteo said to Betsafe: “It’s an important game for both clubs this weekend.

“Manchester United have started the season well, but haven’t played anyone in my opinion.

“Liverpool have played some of the better sides; they haven’t performed to the best they can, but Man United have earned a lot of credit without playing anyone.

“This weekend is a test for both teams – for Liverpool as they need a result and Man United because it’s their first big test.

“For that reason it has got the right ingredients.”

A win for Manchester United on Saturday would take them ten points clear of Liverpool in the league table.
