Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel believes the club have done all they can in order to keep midfielder Leon Goretzka, who is being tracked by Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

The Germany international’s contract expires at the end of the current season and he has been heavily linked with a move away from Schalke as a result of not putting pen to paper on an extension.

He is being courted by some of the best clubs in Europe with a clutch of Premier League sides keen, while even Barcelona and Juventus have been linked with having an interest in the player.

Bayern Munich are believed to be in pole position to sign Goretzka next summer, but a final decision has not been taken as the midfielder also has a contract offer on his table from Schalke.

And Heidel believes the club have offered a top deal to the player, but has indicated that they will not be able to go beyond their means to keep hold of the German.

“If you want to keep a player like Leon Goretzka, you will have to go reach your pain threshold and we have done that”, the Schalke sporting director explained at a press conference.

“Leon knows that what Schalke have offered him represents an extremely high appreciation of his talent.

“And now we have to wait and see.”

Goretzka is expected to make a decision over his future over the German winter break at the end of the year, meaning if he does not sign then clubs could try their luck in the January transfer window.
