Chelsea legend Tommy Langley admits that he was impressed with Andros Townsend's performance in Crystal Palace's win over the Blues and believes the winger could even book an England World Cup squad spot.

Roy Hodgson's men stunned the Premier League champions to claim their first league win of the season by running out 2-1 winners at Selhurst Park.

Townsend, along with Wilfried Zaha, who scored the winner, was in fine form throughout the Premier League fixture and caused headaches for the Blues.

Langley says he is not a fan of the winger, but feels his exceptional performance shows he can push his way into Gareth Southgate's plans for next summer.

"This boy here could be playing his way into the England team next summer because, and I'm not a fan by the way, but today he's been exceptional", Langley said on Chelsea TV, picking out Townsend.

"His work rate has been great and in the final third he is dangerous.

"Very impressed with him today", he added.

Crystal Palace boss Hodgson will hope Townsend can maintain his form and steer clear of injuries as the Eagles look to push up the Premier League table and out of trouble.

Hodgson takes his men north to St. James' Park next weekend to face Newcastle United, before a break from league duty with a visit to Championship side Bristol City in the EFL Cup.
