Former Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair says that it is obvious why Liverpool decided to offload Mamadou Sakho, after he took in the Frenchman's performance in Crystal Palace's 2-1 win over the Blues at Selhurst Park.

Antonio Conte's Premier League champions were expected to make short work of a Palace side who had not won all season in the league, but were soon suffering due to their lacklustre performance.

A Cesar Azpilicueta own goal handed Crystal Palace the lead in the eleventh minute, before Tiemoue Bakayoko headed Chelsea level in the 18th minute.

Wilfried Zaha popped up with the winner for the Eagles in the 45th minute, handing the home side their first league victory of the campaign and Chelsea a forgettable defeat.

But Chelsea did have chances to level and with just minutes left in the game Sakho produced backheel in his own penalty box as he attempted to deflect the ball off a Blues player to win a goal kick.

Sinclair was astonished with the sloppy decision made by Sakho, with Chelsea nearly taking advantage of the Frenchman's howler.

And former defender Sinclair thinks in that moment it was clear to see just why Liverpool froze him out and wanted him off the books at Anfield.

"That's why Liverpool got rid of him", Sinclair said on Chelsea TV, looking shocked at what he had just witnessed.

"You can't defend like that.

"He's half a yard off his own backline, in his own six yard box and he tries to backheel it off a forward for a goal kick.

"And nearly cost his team."

Liverpool sold Sakho to Crystal Palace in the summer, with the Frenchman having fallen out of favour with Jurgen Klopp a year earlier.
