Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed that he was approached by former manager Brendan Rodgers over a coaching role at Anfield, but it did not materialise as he was still playing.

The former England international, who spent his entire career on Merseyside, playing a total of 737 games for the Reds before hanging up his boots in 2013, nurtures the dream of associating himself with the team yet again, this time as a coach.

Reflecting on his time at Anfield when Rodgers took over in 2012, the 39-year-old revealed that the Northern Irishman asked him to be his assistant initially.

However, Rodgers eventually brought in other coaches as Carragher played out the remaining year of his career.

According to Carragher, it was fine with him as he still had 12 months to play before hanging up his boots.

"Brendan Rodgers asked me to be his assistant when he first arrived at the club but that never sort of progressed and other people came in, which was fine as I still had 12 months playing", the former defender told the Daily Telegraph Total Football Podcast after joining as a columnist.

"Then I realised if you want to stay in the game there is coaching and the media side so I dipped my toe into both before I finished."

Carragher is currently a football expert with Sky Sports.
