Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has been praised by Noel Whelan for his display against Reading on Saturday, with the former White feeling the custodian commanded his area.

Whites boss Thomas Christiansen chose to drop under-fire Felix Wiedwald and handed Lonergan the spot between the sticks for the visit of the Royals.

Although Leeds went down to a 1-0 defeat to continue their miserable run of form, Whelan felt Longeran turned in a good display, with the exception of one questionable piece of distribution.

"Really pleased. I thought some great shot stops, commanded his area", Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds, when asked about Lonergan.

"He is physical in there, which I like and I thought his ball distribution, bar the first half instance where he tried to chip the ball over the top to Luke Ayling, was really, really good", he added.

Lonergan will be hoping he has done enough to keep hold of the shirt for Leeds' next match, which is a trip to Ashton Gate to take on Bristol City.

Leeds brought Wiedwald in from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen in the summer and Christiansen instantly made the German the club's number 1 between the sticks, replacing Rob Green.
